Just to further drive home why fans would think of a total rebuild for this club: Here is a list of the NYI on the last year of their contract and UFA elegible (or signed to a 1 yr. deal) SATAN COMRIE VASICEK FEDOTENKO SIMON HUNTER BERARD Meyer Now, get rid of Comrie, Fedotenko, Hunter, Vasicek, and Berard, and we're talking about a team sure to compete for Stamkos in the lottery. I seriously doubt there is another team that is on the final year of SO many contracts. The same thing last year, and we even lost two of the blue-chip prospects in the meantime. I also wonder, if there was EVER a team with this many contracts expiring in the history of the NHL (especially twice running!) Well, hey, the Isles are still 750,000 away from getting their own GM off the cap!!! Now, that's what I call cap space utilization And who's going to take any of them? Vasicek, and Satan are the only ones I see someone really wanting, and possibly Tank and Comrie. |

Fair question, but I definitely could see bids put in for Comrie, Hunter, and Vasicek. Satan? Probably. Either way, I wouldn't bring him back to the NYI, if I had my wish. But really, that's not my point. How is that the vast majority of the other clubs, most of whom have better records and have had better records in the past, seem to have their coveted assets on long-term deals? Now, if you want to say that none of the listed impending UFA's listed are coveted assets, then fine; however, that is just a further indictment on how bad this team really is since, outside of Guerin, all of the aforementioned players are the main core of the Islanders forwards. BTW, not totally related, but not totally unrelated, either: How does Andy Sutton get 9 million over 3 years?! Boy, did Snow get hosed on that deal. The NYI should be paying half that much for Sutton, especially if Garth wants to make a serious bid at acquiring Redden, which I would strongly suggest. |

I made the poll. Tolerate meaning, can you stand a few years of HORRID losing again if there is a payoff in a few years..maybe? Doesn't necessary mean moving on from the team..but would you attend games..come here to talk about them etc...support them? Judging by some of the comments in the game day threads I don't think some could. ALLOW ME TO SETTLE THIS DEBATE! "Could I tolerate one more rebuild by the New York Islanders?" "Well, He only beats me 'cus he loves me." If it happens more than once, it's a pattern of abuse and a clear and vivid sign that you are in trouble (as a fan). IF the Isles ownership has to hire a new GM or get ALL NEW players to start ALL OVER with a NEW PLAN.......the owner should sell because he clearly is inept. Of course that logic was applied to Mike Milbury keeping his job and all his coaches keeping their jobs and Alexei Yashin keeping his job........The buck stops, uh......there? If a new rebuild os ordered again for the umpteenth time......just friggen sell the team and call it quits. Another decade of this and the fans in Kansas City, Winnipeg and Hamilton will start the next Save The Isles Coalition against our will. Make it work or sell the team, Chuckles. |

I could tolerate another rebuild, mostly because I have no choice. I'm an Islander fan, that's a prerequisite for rooting for the Isles every year. However, rebuilding under this regime can (I'd like to think) be different than rebuilding under Milbury. Milbury just got rid of players. Traded guys he didn't like, brought players in he liked. Made trades on "feel"! Emotional. Thought he was on a soap opera or something. I'm glad Nolan & Ted seem to work well together. It is SO important to give a coach some say. |

You got that right, at least about Smyth, and there is a way better chance Hannan plays here too, making him a great defensive pairing for any of our crazy zone busting offesnive defensemen. I think we let Blake go, something I have no issue with. When we have a scouting dept. that can't get Nilsson/Parise right, no, I want us to draft top five so even they can't mess it up.Interesting you should mention the Sharks. When Deano took over for Grillo he stepped in to an organization that drafted worse than us, and did not develop what they had very well anyway. The first couple of years they bottom fed, got decent picks, not #1s, but decent picks, and slowly over the next five years progressed using old vets, middle aged grinders, and a couple of kids, but their real strength turned out to be goaltender development with Nabokov, Kipper, and the other guy they just dealt who's name escapes me at the moment. All three of them are top ten, if not periodic top fivers in my book and wound up as good assets for trading to get more of what they needed. All of that, including after Dean was fired, took time. We are starting, right now with a big edge with Rick in goal, and to me, better vets (they had guys like Nichols, Granato, McSorley, Burr, etc.) Over time they were able to improve by trading some of these guys and their own B-level players for better/younger players, but it certainly wasn't overnight, and as for franchise players, Marleau, Nabby, Cheechoo, and what could have been Stuart (give me some lattitudeon the concept of franchise player for all four of those names, I beg you), were all their draft picks, along with great B level talent in guys like Hannan. Thornton was a gift - I wouldn't hold my breath for a player of that level falling into our laps. If you know you have to wait to build the Shark way, why not add a guy who sets the world on fire now through the draft if you think he might even be a Kane/CRosbyish walk on, knowing we are still 5 years under the rosiest of outlooks for a cup team? We've even gotten Top 5 wrong...Eric Brewer, anyone? |

The Islanders are actually not in a bad position - because they have few players on long term deals. That's the smartest thing they did. Hopefully they move at least a couple of guys at the trade deadline for youth and picks. They can restock the NHL roster again next year with one year contracts and do it again. The problem is that the fans - YES US - will start screaming that Wang is cheap and dumped salary and doesn't want to win. You can't have it both ways folks! But lets face it, they're not winning the cup with this roster, I'd rather see them get some picks and quality youth. That's the way you restock in the cap world. It doesn't have to take long. A solid core of quality youth and you sign some top-notch free agents. We already have DP locked up long term and relatively cheap. It means probably not making the playoffs if we trade off say Satan-Comrie- and Tank or Vasi, but we still might slip in. I would lock up Gervais - they already have Martinek and Campoli cheap for the next two seasons. Witt and Sutton are locked up too. Sign Hunter - but let him go if it's too expensive. Whatever we do - please - no more impulsive Smyth type fiascos because we're fighting for the seventh spot. |

We have no solid core of youth let's face it. No one other than Tamby and Bergie will likely make an any kind of impact on this team.....and even theyr'e not likely to for a while. We haven't had a solid core of youth since the dynasty days. Campoli and Gervais certainly should be signed and sealed....actually Campoli already is. But up front we are extremely thin with prospect talent. That has to change. And I totally agree about "Smyth like" moves. YOu simply can't do that unless you know the player is under contract for the next few years. We paid dearly for that mistake. |
