The Bruins would give up a second-round pick in 2009 to the Islanders if Nokelainen plays in 50 or more NHL games in either 2007-08 or 2008-09, or if he appears in 90 or more games total over the next two seasons.

Probably not much chance of getting that pick...

I dont think its too hard to imagine. Bruins will be a young team for the most part for the forseeable future. Plus Nokelainen is the type of kid who would actually gain from playing on the 3rd or 4th line in the NHL most likely just as much as the 2nd line in the minors because he plays a 3rd/4th line game.

I have no problem with this trade. I did not expect Nokie to amount to anything, much like I very rarely expect any of our draft picks to amount to anything. You can definetly see that Snow and Nolan are clearing out as many of Milbury's draft picks and players as possible.

I like Nokelainen. I'll follow him on the Bruins. He was only up for what, 10 games? I remember the effort, the smarts and the grit.

I hate to say it, but (as of right now) Nokie seems to be projecting 3rd line checking center, if he even sticks in the pros. It's not a big loss...I think. That's a spot we could have an abundance of for awhile.

Time will tell (obviously) but it seems there's not really a winner in this trade...whether now or a couple years down the line.

On a side note: Some of you guys should give Bates a break. Ever try to skate with a bad groin? Maybe the surgery the guy had sends him back closer to the the '01-02 player who was probably one of the team MVP's that year with all he did on our best line, the PK, defensively, Penalty Shot.

When Yashin was bought out I thought about Sean because without MM or Yashin around he was next in line for the infamous position of Islander fan whipping boy.

Why we ALWAYS have to have one I'll never know. Ask some old timers how often Billy Smith used to get booed off the ice in the regular season... I even remember when Travis Green was dealt and Kenny Jonsson moved into the wipping boy slot for a nice run.

What is it about Islander fans that it is often our longest tenured player that takes all the heat?

I don't know. Why Jon Sim will get more benefit of the doubt on Opening night than Sean Bates I have no idea.

Guess it just becomes the "popular" thing to do to make your friends laugh at a game.

A-freaking-men! I have NEVER understood the hatred some people have for Bates, who was shockingly valuable his first year here (the penalty shot is without a doubt the highlight of the Islanders since May of 1993, as sad as that is) and has always given 100% effort and great PKing. Stirling used him in ways he wasn't meant for (i.e. first and second-line duty), but when used properly as Lavy and Nolan have, he has been great for the role he's assigned. I could do without the constant hooking penalties, for sure, but I think that was more of a result of his groin issues at times, when he just didn't have that extra step to the player with the puck.

Trading Nokoleinen for Ben Walter seems like more evidence that Snow is trying to distance himself from many of "Milbury's players". Zhitnik and York gone, etc.

Why this trade? It could be any number of reasons. The Isles need depth at center and Nokie almost assuredly will not be ready to play in the NHL this season. The Isles could have decided that Nokie will never be the same player following his very serious surgery. The Isles may have opted for help now rather than waiting what may be 2-3 years for Nokie. Or more simply the Isles may just like Walter better than Nokie. Conversely the Bruins may have instigated the deal feeling they have enough at center and can wait on Nokie or they must just like Nokie better.

Let's not forget that EK did have this deal long before it happened. He said an Isles/Bruin deal could be major or minor. He also said the Isles were looking for a center. The deal turned out to be minor but EK is not always wrong.

I will talk with two guys that know Nokie very well, one as a hockey player, the other has a personal relationship with the kid and will really miss him. If I get anything interesting I'll let you know. Tried to get both guys before posting but both were out.

He had a really, really good season in 01-02.

4 NHL seasons and 5 years later we haven't seen a single minute that reminds us of the 01-02 season. Hey, if he shows it again I'll cheer, but even with the team so far down under the cap he's 1.2m of worthlessness.

When Yashin was bought out I thought about Sean because without MM or Yashin around he was next in line for the infamous position of Islander fan whipping boy.

He deserves it. See above answer

Woah, I have unrequited love for KJ, but he was a horrendous Captain...one of the worst I've ever seen...and I'm not in the dressing room or know the players.

It was just obvious. He should've turned it down or given it up quickly. He's smart enough to know you can't grow into that role.

You must've seen that as well?

We HATE long-term contracts!

He's our new shiny toy!!!!!1!!

I boo at games. There's usually a good reason for it when it happens, it's not a constant.

My dislike of Bates goes back longer than my dislike of Yashin. That is saying a lot right there. .

People need to be careful with what they are making this kid out to be. How about we let him finish a couple more years of college hockey before we proclaim him to be the Islanders' saviour? The expectations for him are starting to border on unreasonable (and unfair to him).
Very true. But I will say that the expectations are going that high because Kyle keeps on opening eyes. Nice problem to have.As far as this trade, at first glance I don't like it at all. I really know nothing about the kid we got so who knows. Just as of right now, not happy with this one at all.
Because people liked what they saw.
Basically yeah. I liked what I saw. But that's all over now. Hope that when I see what we got back I'll be pleasently surprised. Right now, not happy.

Yes. If I played at Bates level I would wait for total recovery. Groin injuries are real buggers, and if you do just about anything they take geologic time scale units to heal. They also like to come back for some strange reason, which is the reason I move Bates tomorrow. Hard, yes. Realistic, yes.

A big ditto on all the Bates stuff. Add in there that I will start rooting for him more when he learns what a hooking penalty is and when he stops throwing up his arms in disgust at the aforementioned and also when he blames a teammate when he loses "his" man. Good teammates don't pull that crap by showing up their teammates and he did it a lot. And for those who are going to reply say, I don't remember that, I do and not just once or twice.

sounds like a pretty even trade to me, as both players probably will benefit from a change of scenery. I was very high on Nokey in the limited games he played on the Island, but he has yet to reclaim that status since. Walter has been more productive in the minors, so let's see how it plays out. I trust Nolan's assessment more than any other Isles decision maker since Torrey.

As for Bates, my beef is not his play, but how other coaches fell in love with his game and played him like a number 1 player. He generally lacks the finishing touch, but he hustles his arse off when he is healthy. He might prove to be a very important player on this team again. PK, decent faceoff guy, and the ability to play on the 3rd or 4th line can help this team greatly.

As a fan, I never boo home players (a couple of times at the end of an unspirited period I have booed the team), as I do not see the benefit in helping the team. I just blame the refs!
