This is exactly the contract we should not dive into.

I see no good reason to bring McCabe here unless Nolan is sure he can turn him into a disciplined player. Even then I would want, at a minumum, their 2007 or 2008 1st round draft pick to take on his silly contract.

Hell, its not like they will put it to good use anyway.

The Mcabe contract would be a huge mistake. If the Isles are willing to spend that kind of money I'd rather see it spent on a defenseman who is much younger and can play defense. I am not sure who that is, but its not Mccabe.

Redden I wouldnt mind, but over 6 mil for 1 year, thats a stretch. If he is making 6 now, imagine what he will want when he becomes a ufa after next year.

For a league with a salary cap, the salaries sure are over the top expensive.

Even if the McCabe deal is a horrible one, it's nice to hear the ISLES being the ONLY team someone is considering....

...kinda makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

A few comments from Leafs fans

McCabe would likely only go to the Islanders, as he has a no movement restriction in his contract. Don't think for a second that the Islanders wouldn't want him, they do. The Leafs would want good return for him, maybe a first round draft pick plus a prospect.

Anyways, that all leads to this. According to the Insider, there is actually a team out there crazy enough to take Bryan McCabe's contract. Crazy hockey team? We're talking about the Islanders, natch, who all of a sudden find themselves with a hella lot more cap space now that Alexei Yashin can call himself a free agent. McCabe was el capitan on Long Island once upon a time, and word is, he might be willing to waive his ironclad no-movement clause to return there (in twenty years, John Ferguson Junior won't just be remembered as the warm body who filled the Leafs' GM spot after Pat Quinn and before the man who finally ended the cup draught, no Fergie will also be remembered as the man who gave hockey the no-movement clause. Let's all say thanks for that guys).

If there is a team silly enough to want McCabe at the almost 6 mil per the Leafs are paying him, it's going to be the Islanders. Buying out Yasher with four years left on his contract might be the sign of a team finally getting its act together, or it might be be a sign of business as usual.

No offense McCabe, but you might not have noticed that there are a ton of young ankle biting blueliners in Leaf jerseys just waiting for a chance to prove themselves, and as long as long as you continue to clog up a roster spot with your sustained mediocrity, it is just that much harder for them.

Go home Bryan.

Without Yashin to dump on Toronto, taking McCabe's contract doesn't make any sense. With Alexei's 10 year contract now history, McCabe and Richards are the likely candidates for worst deal in hockey. Yet, so many Islander fans would seemingly take them in a heartbeat. Even if McCabe only had 2 years left on his deal or was making a million per less, we need TWO defensman and a sack of forwards. If we can bring back Poti, get the other -d-man via free agency and save the trade assets for a wing or center.

The only way I see the Isles trading for McCabe is if Smyth walks and they get desperate for a PR splash. Bryan would certainly help, he just wouldn't help enough to justify his contract..

Put it to you this way, If McCabe made $3M a season, I wouldn't want him.

There is a reason why Toronto would look to get rid of him and that is he is lacking in so many departments. Sure, he is excellent on the PP, but let's not forget his partner Kaberle who helps him achieve those stats. His skating is less than desireable, he is CONSTANTLY out of position, the obvious one in that he is terribly undisciplined and much like Shawn Bates, looks like he will never learn the new rules. He is a PP specialist that makes WAY too much money and probably already has had his best years on the offensive side. We already have a PP specialist in Bergeron.

A big NO THANK YOU! And screw you Toronto fans, the majority of Islander fans don't want him here. Let's just pray that our management feels the same way.

There is only 1 scenario under which I'd explore a trade for McCabe.

If Poti wants 4 or more years at over $4mil per, I'd let him walk.

Then I'd trade Satan and Bates for McCabe, and sign Sarich as an UFA for less than $3 mil per year, on a 3 year deal (he'll probably get more) ...

McCabe-Martinek

Witt- Gervais

MAB-Sarich

All things being equal, I'd rather sign Poti to a 3 year deal at around $3.5 mil per, and then try to trade for Boynton, or sign Sarich.

Let the Leaves suffer with McCabe's contract. For 5.75 mil, the Isles can get two solid D-men.

I think signing Poti and another good Dman is a top priority of this club. Our D was totally worn down 3/4 through the regular season. I wouldn't mind McCabe, but I would want someone else coming back for McCabe, possibly expanding the deal to get one of their young forwards.
