Karel-
I don't deny that Jason Blake wants to win a cup. What player doesn't? But in my opinion a "team player" is someone who looks to make their team better. Not jumping on another team because they have a better chance. But again, no one knows what Blake is thinking, so anything we say either way is pure speculation.

In other words, 99% of NHLes are not team players?

Blake will go wherever he can get the best deal (money, length of contract, city, area, qulaity of team, etc. will all be factors). Testing the FA market doesn't make him anymore "selfish" or any more of an A-hole.

Going for the money kinda does make someone an A-hole. The special players make concessions to play where they really want. If Blake really wants to play on LI, but takes more money and signs with Chicago, I don't see that as a team player. I see that as someone who cares about money more than hockey.

Right, because we all know that you would GLADLY take less from your current employer than get a raise at a competitor because you're such a teeeeaaaam player.

If the Isles are offering $10M for 3 years and Chicago offers $25M for 5 years, of course he'd take it (everyone would). Not to mention that he's a mid-western boy and he'd be a lot closer to home in Chicago.

Why?? - he's still playing hockey. This a business for the players not an entertainment pastime as it is for the fans.

In effect the Isles are just another business in his profession. If the CEO of Ford goes to GM for more money that means he doesn't like cars?? He's still in the same profession.

I think Blake might stay here for a little bit less money if the Isles come close to another offer, but it's foolish to think he's going to give a huge discount.

I was just using CHI as an example. So I hope no one out there thinks I'm "Eklunding" anything.

I probably would take more money from a competitor. But I wouldn't if I had to move my family, or go to a worse team. We'll see where Blake's allegiances lie...if he takes 5 years 30 mil from Columbus, and turns down 4 years 20 mil from a better team we'll understand.

And if I worked on LI and could make an extra 20k working in the city I would do it. but if I had to move to Idaho or Utah? I'm not so sure.

Let's see 3 @ 10, or 4 @15, or your example of 4 at 20, or 5 @ 30!

Flutie84 it's all relative, and it's the nature of their business. If someone was willing to pay him in more years and of course more money he, or any professional athlete would be moronic not to take it. He's in his mid thirties, do you think an extra guaranteed $5 - 10 million wouldn't or shouldn't alter his thoughts for the next 3, 4 or 5 years.

At 38 he'll be retired and could live (and work) if he wanted to back home in Minnesota!

Understand what? That he would prefer an extra $10M? Who wouldn't?

You chastize him for wanting to go to a contender (instead of wanting to make his current team bettter) and you chastize him for going to a weaker team. No-win situation...

Any team can be a contender. Low budget teams can compete, too. Don't take the most money from the Yankees if you want to play with the Cardinals.

It is relative. To us, an extra 5 million is a boatload. To a millionare, does it mean the same? (I wish I knew!)

In the end, play where YOU want to, not where your accountant wants. If you can get the most money from the team you most want to play for, great. If not, then you weigh what matters more: the money, or your desires.

The only time I'll agree with you on this is if you're talking about someone like ARod or a player of that caliber who has made a lot of maoney already and would really love to play for the shear opportunity to win a championship.

Jason Blake toiled for a long time before he started to make significant money, and IMHO at this stage of his life and career he's be an absolute ***hole to leave any money on the table.
