Veteran continuity is also important, so a constantly rotating gate of vets on a yearly basis is not something to view as a positive.

If we were talking Crosby and Malkin, or the young talent the Isles had in the late 70's it's a little different...we're not.

I don't argue with veteran continuity being important, and the Isles tried that with Ryan Smyth. Unfortunately, he didn't want to stay. The vets that were left in UFA (after Briere, Drury and Gomez) weren't anybody that you'd want for more than 3 years. Isles are using these vets as hired guns.

This is just year 2 of the Snolan era. Since Plan A didn't work, having a vet like Smyth here, Plan B (or c,d,e etc.) is now in place, like it or not.

If Isles youth (Tambellini, Bergenheim, Gervais, Campoli) can gel with core players (Hunter, MAB, Witt, Sillinger) to make a nice nucleus, luring top tier UFA's next year may be an easier task.

The players did remarkably well gelling together. They performed well together and bonded (with Yashin as captain) and exceeded expectations.

It's NOT the players that caused the UFA's to flee. It's not the players (and certainly not Nolan) that caused the Isles to miss out on every UFA until Fedetenko (and we got 48 year old Guerin, JOHN SIM and a few others.....including castaway (Satan?) Comrie - who I believe has talent we need and attitude we're USED TO *

It's the organization.

The organization that time and again gets the Pecas and Yashins and Satans and just ANYONE who is trouble, occasionally getting a Sillinger or Witt, but still poisoned with lockerroom cancers.

It's the organization that overspends on anyone that will agree to come here, yet not stay the course on any plan (hopefully now they will after the Smyth deal).

The Isles are the single biggest reason why we're NOT a place UFA's will stay or come to UNLESS they want to:

build a name
get a contract elsewhere
sign for double their value

So don't include the players, the hard working guys like Sillinger or Trent or Witt or others.

Just look at the moronics of 15 year deals, bad contracts and bad trades that NEVER seem to be ending.

Look at the one constant: bad ownership.

We're Chicago with a billionaire meglomaniac moron instead of cheapo Wurtz.

Arbitration was a relatively painless process for the Islanders and Trent Hunter, who was awarded a one-year deal for $1.55 million, which general manager Garth Snow quickly accepted today. The absence of acrimony left the door open to future negotiations for a multi-year deal for Hunter, who has been described by Snow as “the quintessential Islander.”

Oh God. I hope Greg is just speculating on names and not the names that Snow is looking at.

If you asked me to come up with a list of names they should stay away from, those would be the guys.

McCabe, Allison, Randy Robitaille?????

Bottom line, I would rather the Isles invest 4 to 5 million in McCabe than Markov (which, apparently, is what he is looking for).

Yeah, I'd have to agree with that.

Vascicek is an interesting option and I wouldn't mind the Isles taking a shot at him.

What worries me about Vasicek is that he hasn't played a full season since the lockout. I'd much rather see if the Isles could pry Stajan loose from the Leafs in that proposed McCabe deal. Granted, a healthy Vasicek is a 20-goal guy and Stajan hasn't scored more than 15 goals at the NHL level, but Stajan is also a few years younger, in pretty good health (has missed only two games in the last three years at the AHL and NHL level), and is still under contract for this year.

That said, I'm still hoping that Dean Lombardi has a total brain cramp next week and walks away from Cammalieri's arbitration deal.

Well there is an opening on the Isles for that type of player now that Blake has gone...
